THE VOLUME
Moving between Art and Anatomy, the volume surprises and redefines the way we view and ‘experience’ the work of Leonardo, a pioneer of avant-garde Renaissance scientific research. Over 300 anatomical plates which, drawing on the observation and study of the human body, take the form of a philosophical, if not spiritual, treatise.
Conceived as a museum exhibition, this vast body of work is presented by Professor Martin Kemp in thematic ‘rooms’ where the viewer, by engaging with the medical and scientific specifics of the human being (heart, bones, muscles and tendons), ultimately comes to see Man as a creature, a voice and a child of Nature, of the Divine.
An innovative organisation and visual presentation from which emerges not only Leonardo’s vision, shaped by his philosophy of the human body and, more generally, of nature, but also a new way in which Leonardo communicates with us half a millennium later.
The volume also brings together textual contributions by one of Italy’s leading Anatomists, Professor Mario Rende of the University of Perugia, which explore the medical and scientific significance of Leonardo’s anatomical studies, revealing his insights, research methodology and experimental and analytical approach, and establishing him as an innovator and pioneer in the observation and mechanical description of the human body.
The unique thematic and photographic journey presented in these pages reveals Leonardo’s highly personal vision of the human ‘machine’ and its marvellous workings, in constant dialogue with the broader context of philosophical knowledge and scientific inquiry.
