Archiginnasio library is situated in a building dating back to 1500 which was the University of Bologna's location from 1563 to 1803.
It is the most important civic library in Italy, thanks to its bibliographic, documentary and artistic heritage.
It preserves important documents of the City's history .It is a library for research and conservation,focused mostly on humanistic production and providing specific materials (literary, historical, philosophical, artistic, biographic and bibliographic).
The library's original collection was based on convents 'heritages devolved to Comune di Bologna after the abolition of all religious corporations. It was then enriched thanks to new acquisitions and donations.
From 2008 it holds the regional archive of the emiliano-romagnola editorial production (ARPE ).
The institute promotes conferences and volumes' presentations. It organises exhibitions to promote its heritage.
It publishes the annual magazine « L'Archiginnasio » and the volumes of “«Biblioteca de “L’Archiginnasio” » collection.Library's public services are located on the first floor: a reading room ( 130 seats), A Reference room; a consultation room where materials are arranged on open shelves (90 seats); a periodicals section; an area dedicated to photo reproductions, a room for consulting manuscripts and rare texts ( 12 seats ), Stabat Mater room : used for conferences, books' presentations ( 120 seats );a section for drawings and prints ( 8 seats ).
